Some time ago, the NHS decided that the patient should be at the centre of everything. This meant that the patient had to be involved in all decisions about diagnosis, treatment and recovery or rehabilitation. The patient had to be treated like someone of worth by all healthcare professionals including cleaners and anyone else working in a hospital or other clinical environment. Some professionals seem to think that patient-centred care is voluntary, a service that can be ignored. What does the patient know anyway, right? Wrong!

Whatever happened to patient-centred care? The NHS has gone to great lengths to inform the world that the patient is at the centre of everything they do including the decision-making process. In other words they don’t do anything without the knowledge or permission of the patient. Yet my experience was altogether different. My concerns were completely ignored.
